Joining ETA SIGMA

By joining Phi Alpha Theta, you not only join a national honor society dedicated to the study of history, but you also become eligible to win academic recognition and prizes at regional, state, and national conferences, as well as eligibility to a list of Phi Alpha Theta and PAT related scholarships. There are over 25 scholarships and prizes awarded annually to PAT members. These include scholarships at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, paper prizes, book awards, manuscript award, best chapter awards, student history journal awards.

Information on Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) is an academic honor society for colleges and universities whose mission is to encourage and promote the study and research of History through the encouragement of good teaching, research, exchange of learning and ideas among historians at PAT conferences, and through the publication of high quality research in the Historian. The Society has over 400,000 members, with some 9,000 new members joining each year through 970 chapters nationwide.

Membership Qualifications for Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 courses) in History, earned in the classroom, online or through AP or transfer credits (or a combination thereof)

A minimum GPA of 3.1 in History and 3.0 GPA overall are required. A student need not be a history major to apply

There is a one time $50 membership fee Members are members for life

Membership Qualifications for Graduate Students

Graduate students should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master’s Degree in History

Have a GPA of better than 3.5, and shall have completed approximately 30% of your institutes or programs requirements for the Master’s Degree

It is important to try and join as an undergraduate due to these require qualifications for graduate students!
